Cottages

Two stone countryside cottages. Made for two.

At The Rivington Collection, both of our cottages are designed around the same simple idea: somewhere peaceful to slow down, spend time together and enjoy the countryside.

Both sleep two and share the same core comforts:

  • Private hot tubs
  • Wood-burning stoves
  • Dog-friendly
  • Stone-built
  • Secure picket-gated outdoor areas
  • Countryside setting

Each cottage has its own layout, outlook and character, so guests can choose the stay that suits them best.

Rivington on the doorstep. Plenty beyond it.

The Rivington Collection sits at Tan Pits Farm in Anderton, with the Rivington landscape and the West Pennine Moors right on the doorstep.

Reservoirs, woodland, Lever Park, the Terraced Gardens, Pigeon Tower and Rivington Pike are all close by, so you can step out into the countryside and spend the day exploring without needing to travel far.

And when you feel like going a little further, Manchester, Liverpool, the Lancashire coast and the Lake District are all within easy reach. It means you can spend one day among the hills and reservoirs, another by the sea or in the city, then come back to the quiet of the countryside, the hot tub and the fire at the end of it.

Joan’s Piggery

A characterful historic retreat for two, with open-plan living and views across the surrounding countryside.

Joan’s Piggery is something quite special. The building is the original pigsty at Tan Pits Farm and is Grade II listed in its own right, with Historic England dating it to probably the early 18th century. Once a simple sandstone farm building with its own pig pens, it has now been carefully transformed into a warm and characterful countryside retreat for two.

Inside, everything sits together in one relaxed open-plan space, with the sleeping area, kitchen, dining and lounge flowing naturally into one another.

The cottage looks directly across the surrounding fields, where cattle often wander past when they are grazing nearby. The Pigeon Tower can be seen throughout the year, while in winter the view opens up towards Rivington Pike.

Step outside and there is your own private hot tub and a secure picket-gated area for guests bringing a dog — a peaceful little place to sit back, look across the fields and let the day slow down.

  • Open-plan bedroom, kitchen, dining and lounge
  • Private hot tub
  • Wood-burning stove
  • Walk-in shower
  • Secure picket-gated outdoor area
  • Dog-friendly
  • Stone-built cottage
  • Countryside setting
  • Views across the surrounding fields

Elliots Stables

Cosy, characterful and tucked into the hillside.

Elliotts Stables was the first cottage in The Rivington Collection. Originally built as a stable building in the early 2010s, it was later transformed into a cosy countryside retreat and welcomed its first holiday guests in December 2021.

Inside, the kitchen, dining and lounge areas sit together in an open-plan living space, while the separate bedroom and bathroom give Elliotts a more traditional cottage layout.

Built partly into the hillside, it has a naturally snug and intimate feel. The bathroom has both a full bath and walk-in shower, while outside, your private hot tub sits right beside the neighbouring fields

When cattle are grazing nearby, they regularly wander past the back of the cottage and hot tub, sometimes stopping to peer through the windows. It gives Elliotts a lovely sense of being right in the middle of the countryside while still having your own private place to switch off.

  • Open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge
  • Separate bedroom
  • Private hot tub
  • Wood-burning stove
  • Bath and walk-in shower
  • Secure picket-gated outdoor area
  • Dog-friendly
  • Stone-built cottage
  • Countryside setting
  • Fields directly behind the cottage

Two cottages, two different ways to stay

Both cottages are made for two, with private hot tubs, wood-burning stoves, dog-friendly outdoor spaces and the countryside on the doorstep.

Joan’s Piggery is completely open-plan, with wide views across the surrounding fields, year-round views of the Pigeon Tower and seasonal views towards Rivington Pike.

Elliotts Stables has a separate bedroom and bathroom, including both a bath and walk-in shower, with a snugger feel and neighbouring farmland immediately behind the cottage.

The choice is simply about which style of stay feels more like you.

However you want to spend it

Some guests come to explore Rivington properly. Others plan an activity, head out for a day in Manchester or by the coast, or simply slow everything down and enjoy the cottage.

Walk the reservoirs and Terraced Gardens, try something more adventurous, stop somewhere local for food — or decide that the hot tub, the fire and nowhere else to be are enough.

There is plenty within easy reach, but no pressure to fill every day.
